For one month the Washington Freedom had played its best soccer, coming together as a team just in time to put together a streak that not only booked it a trip to the playoffs but also a home game.
But despite the confidence the team had shown in the past four weeks — a span of six games during which Washington lost just once — the Freedom floundered on Saturday afternoon in the game that mattered most, seeing its season end with a 2-1 loss to Sky Blue FC (8-8-5) in front of 4,217 at Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds.
The loss ended the Freedom’s inaugural season in Women’s Professional Soccer and came at a time when the team seemed to finally be coming together and getting healthy.
The Freedom (8-8-5) struggled to match the form it had shown the previous week when it downed this same New Jersey team, 3-1, to win the No. 3 seed.
U.S. international Natasha Kai punished Washington for a mistake in its box in the 55th minute to put Sky Blue FC up 1-0, and it seemed as though the Freedom would fall by that score.
