Abby to serve one game suspension, insists she meant no harm

Abby Wambach will serve a one-game suspension for her tackle on St. Louis star Daniela last Sunday at Maryland SoccerPlex, WPS Commissioner Tonya Antonucci ruled tonight. Wambach is expected to miss the May 17 game at Boston.

“I’ve been in contact with a close friend on the [St. Louis] team to stay updated [on Daniela’s condition],” Abby said. “Unfortunately soccer is a physical game and players do get injured. There was no intent on my side to cause any harm. ... My thoughts and prayers are with her.”

Yes, I’m interested in updates!

We love soccer, womens and mens, We would love to come back to freedom game, we came but you were at Nationals, we were heartbroken, so we settled for shirts instead for our girls. They were so excited, Abby Wambach will be here today, It was a great game and we will be back. I’m so glad you are back at your game. You are truly an inspiration for our 9 and 11 yr olds girls.

Abby-

You are my favorite player-I play attacking midfield and forward. I am 10 and my goal all season has been to head the ball in the net. I have one tourney left (3 or 4 games) any advice how I can do it??? I have done it in practice but I can never seem to get it in the goal in the games! Help…also do you put hair gel or just wet your hair before games to keep it out of your face??? # 1 fan and soccer player RORY BROWN

I have to agree with the former posts. We are huge fans of the WPS and watch most games, even if its not our LA Sol. In fact, since most Fox WPS Sunday’s showcase the WSH team we have gotten to know the team well, including you Abby. My point here is that we agree that you should not be suspended for a game, this is not powder puff sports league this is the real deal and you know what, it happens. I can recall that a similar situation happened when I played Y AYSO. I only hope this is not a precedent for the WPS. We look forward to your next goal milestone and many more to follow. And next time you are in LA we would love to have you meet the girls in our Sports and Leadership program!

Abby, I am a big fan of yours and am upset about your suspension. That looked like a clean tackle to me. I look back at the collision that caused your leg break and that was a suspendible tackle/collision. Can’t wait to see you back out there playing your heart out. Take care and good luck to you.

I have been an Abby fan for years. Coaching girls youth soccer for 10 years, I recognized early that Abby is a special player and person and sets a great example for younger players.
