Q: How are you feeling now that you have resumed training with the national team?
Abby Wambach: Saturday was my first full day of training. We’ve been here for over a week and it’s been up and down. I practiced the first day pretty hard and sort of ignored any discomfort that I was having, and then couldn’t walk for three days, so I’m taking it slow. I’m taking small steps and doing what I can. It’s kind of the way that this type of injury goes. It’s sometimes two steps forward and one step back.
Q: Are you happy to be back with all your girls on the field?
Abby: It’s great to be back. This is my extended family, so I missed them for six months. They went off and did huge things like winning the gold medal, and then had their celebration tour, so they’ve all been spending so much time together and I feel like I’m just catching up on some of the stories and stuff, so it’s great.
Q: Did you expect your return to be easier or more difficult that it actually has been?
Abby: Hands down, this week has been a lot more difficult than I thought it would have been. The closer you get to being healthy after having a huge injury, the harder it gets. The bone is no longer broken, it’s just getting the muscle tone and strength back now. I’m getting used to running and the repetitive motion of foot striking again. Aside from that it’s been learning to play soccer again, so it has been interesting.

Hi Abby,
Great to hear that you’re on the field again, can’t wait to see you play again. I brought my girls U12 team to see you in Blaine, MN a couple of years ago. My entire team was in awe watching your effort. It was 120 degrees on the field and very humid and yet you played the entire game, never slowed down and had to pick yourself up about a hundred times as the opponents only defense was to knock you down.
How frustrating is it for you and the Women’s National Team to go to tournaments and win and yet, not have the matches broadcast? What can be done to get more games broadcast?
I watch a lot of soccer and I really prefer watching the women’s games more than the men’s National Team games. The movenent, control and creativity from the Women’s team is superior.

Hey, Wambach! I’m glad to see that you are on the comeback trail! I suffered the same injured last August (broken tib/fib) and have a new titanium rod to prove it. At least now, I think our legs are indestructible. :) Your perseverance and work ethic has inspired me to do the mount my own recovery program. I can’t wait to set foot on the pitch again this summer! Good goals to ya!

So glad to hear you’re on the field again. I know how it is I broke my ankle pretty bad and sat out for a while. Its a slow proccess, but you got this. Just one question, do you think you will have fears about going in for a hard tackle again? If so, how would you control that fear so that it doesn’t effect your play? Thanks for your time. Can’t wait to see your awesomeness again…

Hey Abby, I am so glad that you are back! I have missed seeing you play! :) How are you doing in training? I have just discovered that I have a leg/knee condition. I have been absent from playing to help let it heal. The doctor said that I can play as tolerated. I do the stretches he gives me but I don’t want to get to out of shape, because I am in the Kentucky ODP state player pool, I play on a premier level club team, and high school soccer starts in July. So coming back from this, do you have suggestions on how to get back in shape without possibly hurting myself? And also, what do you do as a daily workout? I am just curious to see how a pro does it; such as yourself. :) Thanks for reading my email! Shelby, 13 Kentucky

Glad to hear that you are getting back into the game. I had a compound, comminuted diaxillary fracture of my right tibia and fibula in my first college soccer game ever and have been following your rehab progress. You have been doing great and it makes me so happy to see someone with pretty much the same injury having so much success in rehab. Over 5 months and 2 sugeries later I’m still not healed…in a cast. But starting to walk and ride a stationary bike, working on that long lost muscle tone you know oh too well about. As hard as it is to keep positive and work through all the difficulties, it seems that you have done a wonderful job and it has been encouraging to see that. Congrats on hitting the field, and good luck with the continuing rehab. Don’t lose that toughness girl!!!!

Hi Abby, I’m glad you’re back with the team as well. You must be stoked to be on the field again. Everytime I see you play you look so alive out there. I hope all goes well in the future. Good look with making the roster.
